Well over two years ago I bought a red Volvo 1800S. It was originally registered in 1964, so that made it 46 years old. I bought it virtually unseen, but it was a good price and, as it turned out, it was a good car despite the fixes I’ve had to have done to it. And…it’s not finished yet! Since the people I bought it from in California had the plates “64SAINT”, which was a good name, I decided to keep it for Colorado. “64” for 1964, when it was built, and “SAINT” for the TV series of the same name with Roger Moore starring as the eponymous hero (he had a white one).
I really enjoy the car, and I’ve blogged before about it on my main blog, but I thought it would be fun for it to have its own blog where I describe it, its history, why I bought it, what I’ve had done to it, where I’ve been in it. This is that blog. I hope you enjoy what you find here, by all means peruse away. I dare say I’ll blog about stuff once every couple of weeks on the average – let’s see if I can keep it up.
I will warn you though: I’m not the kind of car owner who does his own maintenance. I am no mechanic (I’m a software developer) and I’m always impressed by people who are, including the great guys at Concours Cars who look after 64SAINT. So don’t expect any deep mechanical insights into owning this almost 50-year-old car. Even though when compared to modern cars, it’s a simple engine with simple enough mechanicals – there’s no fuel injection here, not even power steering – it’s still magic to me. I’ll certainly talk about what I get done to it, but it won’t involve me getting oily fingers.
But I tell you it’s a real joy to drive. I smile every time.

Hi!
I had a fantastic P1800 for several years. I was also a sw developer (IBM AS/400) a that time. Amazing, when reading you tale, remembered the adventures I had with my P.
Unfortunately had to sell it, but still own 3 Volvos, one a PV544 from 1961.
Enjoy your car, and let us all (the world!) read and dream with your struggles, but also victories.
Cheers!
